Psychotherapy
75% of people who have therapy end up with better mental health. Why shouldn't you?
How I'll help
Good therapy can change your life.
Therapy works, with larger effect sizes than almost all interventions in cardiology, and greater than the success rate of flu vaccinations. Three quarters of people who have therapy end up with better mental health than those who don’t.
But who you choose to be your therapist matters. The research evidence proves it.
I am trained in a range of evidence-based psychological therapies, to offer you an approach specific to you and your needs, such as:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety and depression
- Attachment-based therapy for those struggling in relationships
- Exposure therapy for panic, social anxiety and general anxiety
- Solution-focused brief therapy
We will get to the heart of the issues causing you problems from session one, and I will suggest practical solutions for your distress. I won’t waste your time with new fads, or techniques that are not backed by research.
I'm quite an active therapist compared to many others: I will step in to help you see your thought patterns and repetitive behaviours, and offer ideas for ways for you to change. I'll suggest readings and things you can practice between sessions. After all, there are 168 hours in a week; you usually only spend one in therapy. How you spend the other 167 matters. I'm not the expert on how you should live your life; but I can help and guide you towards feeling better and living the life you want.
What to expect
In your first session, I’ll ask you what you're struggling with, and why now feels like the right time to make a change in your life. I’ll also ask about any previous experiences of therapy - what was helpful and what wasn't. I want to know what you prefer, and will base how we work with you on your preferences, and what I know from the research tends to work best.
Over the first session or two, we'll work together to narrow that down into what you want to achieve in therapy, and how you might know when you've achieved it. So, you don't need to come with a specific goal in mind.
There'll also be the chance to ask any questions you have - to make sure I am the right person for you.
If I don’t feel like I'm the best person to help, for whatever reason, I’ll direct you to someone better placed to help.
Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place online via Zoom.
I’ve been working solely online for more than two years. The vast majority of people who come to me for help appreciate how convenient it is for them. They don’t have to travel to someone’s office or house, and can fit it in during the working day when an in-person session simply wouldn’t be feasible. The evidence suggests it makes no difference to whether you’ll find our work beneficial.
Fees
My sessions start at £100 for a 50 minute session.
